08 July Inchmahom PrioryHi friends.
This is Inchmahom Abbey and it is set in the most stunning of Scottish lakes it is in fact the only lake in Scotland
The lake of Mentieth. The enchanting ruins of Inchmahom Priory grace the largest of three islands in the lake of menteith.
The ancient order of Augustinians were drawn here by the islands isolation and tranquility.
It has graced the pressance of the infant Mary Queen Of Scots and Mary of Quise and Also King Robert the Bruce prayed here before the battle of Bannockburn.
The double effigy of Earl Walter and Countess Mary is on display in the chapter house.
Walter died in 1295 and was buired beside his wife in the choir of the priory church, this is a charming effigy of them both.
The priory was visited by King Robert the Bruce the same year he killed John comynn III in Dumfries and again another twice
In 1547 the Scottish Army was defeated on the outskirts of Edinburgh by the English, Pannic was on and saw the hurried departure from Stirling Castle to Inchmahom Priory of the dowager Queen Marie of Guise with her infant daughter of 4 years of age Mary Queen of Scots.
The island was a natural choice of safety and sanctuary close to stirling , It was also in control of the son of Lord Erskine, little Marys Guardian. She stayed here for three weeks her name is still used in the little box tower on the center of the island.
The Graham family have thier resting place here to . I was totaly took aback from this place and i hope to return again in the near future.
30 June Lochmaben CastleHi friends .
Out on one of my many travels today went to Lochmaben Castle Home and srtong hold of Robert Bruce Lord of Annandale and Earl of Carrick this was the second Castle built in Lochmaben this one was built by Edward the first of England The first was pulled to ruin by the invading Armies of King Edward the 1 of England in 1298
Robert Bruces this one was where his father died and the bruces made thier home, it is not viewable to the public because it is on a Golf course near by.
The one viewable today is the one that was fought over by the king s of Scotland and England for many years. This one was built by King Edward 1 of England and was made of timber around the castle a picture shows the Invading scots Army trying to desperatly beat the English Army into defat.
The walls are massive and built by stone took from the southern end of castle loch,
Lochmaben castle wa took by King Robert the Bruce in 1306 just shortly when he became king.Just after the battle of bannockburn on the 23 24 June 1314 the castle was surrendered by the scots Then the English returned in 1333 holding the castle for another 50 years ,until Archibald the Grim 3rd Earl of Douglas and Lord of Galloway took it once more for the Scots.
This ruin castle is well worth a visit it is truly beautiful.A testimony to the wars of independance.
15 June Scotlands Greatest son and Warriour Sir William Wallace.Hi friends today is my birthday and me and my family and my young daughter of three went up to the National Wallace Monnument at Stirling .
We all had a fantastic day out my daughter Abbey climed the stairs to the top of the monnument and i carried her all the way down.
Good on you Abbey on the way down me and Abbey cried Freedom.
The story of Wallace has facinetyed me from a young age and Scottish history was and is my favorite subject I studeyed history at Newbattle Abbey Collage.
And i have a diploma in the subject.
The wallace monnument stands proud on top of the Abbey craig and it was the site of Wallacees Greatest victory He Stood along side his co comander Andrew de Morray . Andrew de Morray was fataliy injured at the battle of Stirling Bridge on the 11 September 1297.
And died of his wounds.
It is hard to sum Wallace up in my own concept of him but in many Authours and historians he is the Greatest Son of Scotland .
And the greatest Warriour. In my eyes he is the champion of Scottish independance and of the wright to free his Country from English rule.
